Bowen is a surprising hidden jewel in Queensland that many seem to skip on their further north or south trip. To show you why you need to visit, here is my guide for the best things to do in Bowen.
Only an hour by car north of Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands, is Bowen’s coastal city; Queensland’s best saved secret. Many travelers on the east coast of Australia could lose Bowen, opting to push for Airlie Beach or Townsville depending on the end point of their road trip. However, those who Miss Bowen undoubtedly fail one of the most amazing places in Australia.
My wife and I headed to Bowen as part of our attempt back from Australia, in our East Coast section from Sydney to Cape Tribulation, with few expectations of what to discover. We found a place that left us impressed, perhaps not in terms of the city itself, but the beaches have been constantly voted some of the best in Australia, there are walks with incredible views, street art murals, a heritage stunning 600 meters long and, I promise, the best sunsets on the east coast.
I would recommend spending at least one day here and, to help plan your visit, I have gathered this guide on the most surprising things to do in Bowen.
Things to do in Bowen
The great mango
Bowen is widely known as the mango capital of Australia and the city celebrates that with one of the classic “great things” of Australia; The great mango! This mango is large, 10 meters high and has captivated visitors since 2002. This is definitely worthy of a stop not only for a photo to add to its collection, but also to test the mango sorbet at the visiting information center. If you are a mango lover, you will love this, for me it was more a way to cool off in heat!

Impressive beaches
I was surprised to find such beautiful beaches here in Bowen; One of which has been constantly voted as one of the best beaches in all of Australia. Since Australia has almost 12,000 engraved beaches, that’s not a feat …
There are eight beaches, each worthy of its time and apparently there are all within 10 minutes. Horseshoe Bay is the beach that wins the applause and it is not difficult to see why. The bright white sands are protected by two granite outcrops, which means that it is also perfect for a quiet swimming in the sea. Murrays Bay is an isolated bay protected from the winds and Rose Bay at the end of the Cape Edgecumbe walking track is ideal for kayakists and guests. We will move to Grays Bay Beach shortly …

Cape Edgembe Walking Track
One of the most popular things to do in Bowen is to walk on the track of Cape Edgembe from Horseshoe Bay to Rose Bay. This is a 5.2 km return walk and presents impressive views about the bays to the island of Gloucester and the whipsundys beyond, as well as Ginmous Granito rocks. Mother Beddock is one of the largest rocks that are precariously balance in the cliffs with a view to Rose Bay. We made the typical mistake of starting the walk when it was too hot, so we only arrived so far the rotary watchman, although it still allowed a view of Horseshoe Bay that cannot be lost.
Pier
The Jetty Heritage Bowen is located on the beach and is one of Bowen’s icons. He is over 150 years old, more than 600 m long and is a perfect place for a vagabundo in the afternoon looking at the locals fishing and trying to see turtles! It was too windy when we visited so disappointingly we could not see any turtles.
Not far there is a small water park for those who travel with the little ones and the bird fish bar is highly recommended for lunch!
Mural path
When we wandered through Bowen’s quiet streets, we run into many different murals painted on walls that represent the history of this coastal city. There are 28 murals in total, and the first has been painted on the library wall in 1988. There are also two giant water tanks in a hill in the middle of Bowen (Tynwald Avenue) painted with marine life that shows the beauty of this region.

Sunset at Grays Bay Beach
Hand in the heart, the sunset that we experienced in Grays Bay Beach was the craziest we saw throughout our time in Australia. What makes this so unique is that the bay faces the west despite being on the east coast and lends itself to incredible sunsets full of purple, roses and softer oranges. You will also find many palm trees that simply ask to be photographed. We were amazed at our night, relaxing in Grays Bay Beach before we find a free camp for the night.

That wraps my guide about the best things to do in Bowen, which hopefully inspires you to visit in the future and plan your trip so you can be sure to see everything you need to see here! If you have any comments or recommendation, let’s know below!
