In the southern end of the Tropical Selva of Daintree, there is the spectacular Mossman gorge; A unique link with an old tropical jungle and an ancient way of life. This is my guide to explore Mossman Gorge in Queensland, which will luckily inspire him to visit Australia.
Mossman Gorge is the most beautiful introduction of the Daintree National Park and the Tropical Selva for Daintree. Throughout the gorge, you will find mountains that rise to the clouds literally by your side, as well as the old granite rocks where the Mossman River falls in cascade towards its final destination; The ocean that surrounds the great reef barrier. What seems really special about Mossman Gorge is that you can experience the most unique connection with local aboriginal culture.
Any trip to tropical queensland on the east coast of Australia would not be complete without exploring Mossman Gorge and this guide will take it through everything you need to know about visits.
My guide to explore Mossman Gorge in Daintree National Park
Where is Mossman Gorge and how to get there?
Mossman Gorge is probably the most easily accessible part of the Tropical Daintree jungle; A little more than an hour of Cairns management and only 20 minutes of Port Douglas. When I visited, it was part of our motorhome trip along the east coast of Australia and this was one of our final stops before concluding in Cape Tribulation.
To get there, it is a simple trip to the Captain Cook highway from Port Douglas, a right turn to Mossman and then a left out of the main street to the throat. Literally 20 minutes and just over 22 km. There are tours to which you can join that they will bring you here, but there is something much more free when doing this yourself; You can spend all the time you want, which will allow you to develop a deeper connection with the area.
We parked at the Mossman Gorge Center and chose to take the daily transport bus (between 8 am and 5:40 pm) that will take it directly to the gorge for $ 13.05 each.
The tropical jungle of Daintree
Did you know that Daintree’s tropical jungle has about 180 million years? 180 million years. Compared to the Amazon jungle that everyone is taught so much about what it is alone (I only say but you know what I mean) of 55 million years. The Tropical Daintree jungle is the oldest tropical jungle in the world and is home in Flora and Fauna that are not found anywhere else on Earth. This should be somewhere that each person hopes to visit in his life.
Mossman Gorge Center
As I said before, when you arrive, you will find yourself at the Mossman Gorge Center; An indigenous ecotourism development that begins that real connection with indigenous Australia. Here is a coffee where you can have coffee before or after your trip to the throat, as well as an indigenous art gallery that shows works of art of local artists.
Exploring Mossman Gorge
After using the transport service, it will be left right at the beginning of a path that will take it deeply in the tropical jungle next to the Mossman River. Almost immediately you will reach the most recognizable area of Mossman Gorge; The huge old granite rocks in the river. Swimming is possible, but there are many warnings that it is dangerous and it is fair to say that people have died here (Buzzkill, I know). Be sure to verify the daily conditions of the water and be sensible.
Anyway, we did not have a bit of dip, since the signs clearly said that it was not allowed to swim, so we continued with one of my favorite walks in Australia. Through the Rex suspensive bridge and you are directly to Mount Demi Lookout; I don’t think the photos do this justice, since the mountain literally feels like you, absolutely huge!
The Rainforest circuit track is around 2.4 km and if it arrives early enough, you may be lucky enough to be one of the few visitors. Don’t hurry this walk, it’s beautiful. Honestly, you feel that you have been transported to another world; A world of millions of years.
Keep your eyes wide open for wildlife since some of Australia’s most rare species call this area home. I am talking about the south of Cassawary, tsigüeadas and tree kangaroos among many others. Everything I saw was a bush turkey, so I hope you have a little more luck than me …
Unfortunately, we were in savings mode when we visited, but I would strongly recommend the special guidance Dreamtime walks which are housed by a local indigenous guide.
