Let’s go to the Mediterranean for this edition of my ‘In the streets’ series. Here’s a look at my collection of photographs of Malta taken during a five-night winter holiday.
Welcome to the latest edition of the series that showcases destinations solely through my photography. This time we are in Malta on a family holiday and spent five nights at the Malta Marriott Resort & Spa. We weren’t planning on doing too much, we just fancied one last little getaway before winter really sets in, but we managed two days of exploring in Valletta, venturing to the quiet town of Mdina, drinking lots of coffee, and spending the afternoons at the rooftop pool.
My ‘On The Streets’ series takes us around the world with short posts that focus solely on my unique style of travel and street photography. The series will never be complete, but here’s a look at what I’ve covered so far:
So if you’re ready, let’s take a look at what I managed to capture in Malta; specifically Valletta, Mdina and around Sliema, Balluta Bay and St Julian’s.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN MALTA
THE DETAILS
As with most of my trips these days, our winter holiday in Malta was a family holiday and therefore I didn’t focus primarily on photography. Except for the morning photo walk from the hotel to Sliema and back, all of these shots were captured while out for a walk with the family. Somehow I manage not to let photography interfere with family time, literally taking a few moments to capture something that can quickly capture my interest.
As for my photography equipment, I brought my Fujifilm X-T5 and my X100VI. In terms of lenses for the X-T5, I took too many lenses as usual; 18-55mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4, 56mm f/1.2 and 50-140mm f/2.8. I mainly used the X100VI with its 23mm fixed focal length or the 18-55mm f/2.8 on the X-T5. I’ve mentioned over the last year or two that I’m really enjoying using a zoom lens recently, especially on family vacations where I don’t want to be constantly thinking about changing lenses. However, I should take fewer lenses to avoid getting bogged down in the question of which focal length might work best. I’ve found that I take a few different lenses so I can capture images for the travel blog as well so, over time, I can create a variety of different guides. The 35mm f/1.4 is a lens I can’t travel without, I love it, and the 56mm f/1.2 is a unique lens that is once again becoming one of my favorite lenses. This was the lens I had attached to my X-T5 for my morning photography walk. Finally, the telephoto lens is still one of those lenses that I know I shouldn’t carry with me, but I love the compression it provides, allowing me to get some unique images. Whether or not that’s worth the heavy camera bag, I think it’s about 60% worth it at this point, haha!
All color images are JPEG using my ‘Negative Summer’ recipe with a few finishing touches added; I’ll soon post my thoughts on adding some slight edits to Fujifilm recipes; I’ve been doing it since 2018 and I think it just adds a little bit more to my photos. Sometimes you just have to adjust the exposure, the horizon and add a little more contrast. It doesn’t change how much work Fujifilm’s recipe does here, the colors come straight out of the camera.
