From Castle Hill’s heights to Palm Tree Boardwalks, from the Magnetic Island to the Great Barrier of Coral, Townsville in Tropical Queensland is a great place to visit. This is my guide to the best things to do in Townsville, Queensland.
As part of my wife and the failed attempt in Australia’s lap, we spent a few days exploring Townsville in Tropical Queensland, about 350 km south of Cairns, and we quickly settled in her easy lifestyle. Whether you are looking for relaxing walks along the promenade in front of the beach with palm trees to where your eye can see or 360 ° views from Castle Hill, through the beautiful Magnetic Island or the fresh walls of street art, Townsville is a place that could easily stay for a week or so.
To fill your time here, I look at my guide on the best things to do in Townsville. It will not disappoint you!
Things to do in Townsville
CASTILLO COLINA
A little less than 1,000 feet, Castle Hill dominates Townsville’s horizon. Just a few meters from being classified as a mountain, you can’t visit Townsville without experiencing this giant pink granite monolith that reminds me a lot of Gibraltar’s rock. Divide the city into two with most Townsville attractions between Castle Hill and the coast.
If you have a car, you must definitely drive the 2.6 km road that is breath in Castle Hill to the summit so that it can soak up in those magnificent views of the magnetic island and beyond. For those with a good level of physical condition, they can take the goat track consisting of 758 steps by the steep slopes! Anyway, those 360 ° views from the top are worth it more worth it.

The thread
When I dreamed of visiting Townsville, it was the thread, the iconic coast of the city that always happened to me. Stretching 2.2 km, the thread is a seafront in front of the sea of palm trees with incredible views of the magnetic island. I could wander this seafront indefinitely, it would be happy. There are playgrounds, picnic places, bars and restaurants, a splash park and a protected lagoon to swim. This is heaven.

Street art
Townsville’s street art scene was much more eclectic that I imagined. The Local Council encourages mural painting throughout the city with a path to walk created to ensure that none of the most prominent aspects is lost. I wrote with many more details about street art in Townsville, but I recommend taking a map of the visiting information center and taking time to explore the streets of the city in search of the best works of art. Most of the work of art is located on Sturt and Ogden streets.

Townsville Brewing CO
Drinking a cold beer on the small terrace in Townsville Brewery Co was actually one of my favorite things we did when we visited Townsville. First, the building is beautiful. This independent artisanal brewery is within the Old Townsville General Post Office that opened in 1889 with its iconic clock tower and its classic Victorian design. He feels like an old pub inside, Australian classic, with excellent pub food and an even better beer; I loved the Costa Tropical Pale Ale.

One day trip to the Magnetic Island
One of the best things to do in Townsville is right next to the coast, on a short trip in a twenty -minute ferry. Magnetic Isand, or ‘Maggie’, as the locals often call it, is simply impressive with its empty white sand beaches, crystalline seas, historical walks of World War II and resident koalas. We hire a car in topless (Barbie car) on the island and we will basically explore the dream for just one day. If you have more time, I recommend that you stay in Maggie for a longer time and really sink into your relaxed rhythm.

Explore the great reef barrier
Ah, the great reef barrier. The Unesco World Heritage site is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and the only living being in the visible land from space. Any trip to Australia would not be complete without visiting the Great Barrier Reef and Townsville is one of the most popular places to enjoy a one -day excursion. We visited the reef of Cairns, although apparently the reef is in a better condition, the further south goes. He only has been reached by Townsville for two hours after he can enjoy this unique submarine world snorkeling or diving. We saw reef sharks, sea turtles and huge Maori fish and, although we saw evidence of coral laundering, I would say that everyone needs to visit the Great Arrecife barrier at least once in their life.
Visit Wallalan Falls
A little more than 2 hours by car, in the Girringun National Park, is the single one of Australia. Australia is surprisingly full of incredible waterfalls (so many more than I expected), but Wallalan Falls is the best of all, in cascade 268 meters by a cliff face. If you can do it, descend through the hard Djyinda track to the bottom of the waterfall to obtain epic views and incredible photos of photos. It is a complicated walk, but it is worth it. If you want to know more about Wallalan Falls, go to my separate guide here.

Where to stay in Townsville
When we visited Townsville, we had a strict budget. If we had to complete the entire return of Australia, we had to make sure to save money where we could. We found a free camp on Wikicamps right outside Townsville next to a service station; We stayed there for two nights, but it meant that we had money to spend on visiting Magnetic Island. If I visited again, and I hope it was a day, I would definitely look at me in The Ville Resort (beautiful pool area and excellent location) or in Ardo Next to the most incredible infinite pool. Compared to hotels prices in the United Kingdom at this time, I would say that they offer good value for money.
As you can see, Townsville is a must stop on any road trip along the east coast of Australia and, hopefully, this guide of the best things you can do in Townsville will help you plan your next visit.
