Any trip in the deep Northumberland, possibly the most underestimated county in England, must be fed properly. Whether it is in the picturesque Costa, wandering through the wall of Hadrian or timing the tides to cross Holy Island, you will need to know where to find the best coffees in Northumberland for their caffeine arrangement and some bite.
Northumberland, Border County of England, is undoubtedly my favorite here in the country. Not only do I say that either because I now call the Northeast House. You will find radical golden beaches with castles to protect them, the wall of the old Hadrian, the market cities and the beautiful landscapes in all the places where you look. However, Northumberland cannot explore without properly feeding with good coffee, strong and sweet tea. There are so many coffees in Northumberland, but I am here to try to find the best and make sure it is not lost.
I will not pretend that I have been in all Northumberland and frequented each and every one of the coffees to bring my thoughts about the best cafes in Northumberland, but what I hope to achieve, is to give it some inspiration and guidance on where it is possible to go to a pot of tea, a flat white or a portion of cake. I would also say that I will surely add to this list with time, since I spend more time in the county and I can really immerse myself in the scene of your coffee.
Without further ado, let’s enter this guide on the best Cafes in Northumberland, according to me.
The 13 best coffees in Northumberland
MAP
All the recommended coffees in this publication are included on the map below.

The landing – Beadnell
First is the landing, a coffee/bar wood dressed just a stone shot from the beautiful Beadnell Bay beach. Given the location, it is not surprising that seafood focus here for diners, but I discovered that landing is also a great place for cold coffee (or frozen coffee) during the day. If the weather is good, to be fair, even if not, there is a shortened typi to sit. One thing I love for those of you with a motorhome or motorhome, you can stay in the parking lot only for £ 20!
Pilgrim coffee – Santa Island
When I visited the Sacred Island of Lindisfarne for the first time in 2023, we arrived quite early just after the tides retired, so we definitely needed a coffee to pick us up. I was on the moon to find coffee for pilgrims in a small walled patio that serves freshly roasted coffee with a shipping container. The beautiful stone cabin has recently been restored, so the cafeteria has returned inside. You can even stay in the room floor Upper floor!
Northumberland HQ – Vallum Farm
One of my favorite coffees in Northumberland and places to hang out, Northumberland HQ is worth stopping to experience coffee specialized on the site and collect unique local products. Northumberland HQ is home to the team behind ‘Nland 250’ (the iconic road travel route through the county), the rental of defenders of Northumberland and the excellent series of the magazine ‘This is Northumberland’.
Copper oter – Bamburgh
The main street of Bamburgh in the center of its dreamy town has to be one of the most picturesque streets throughout the country. There are not many places where historical stone houses house ‘English’ tea rooms, butchers and pubs with the iconic Bamburgh castle that rises over them. Copper teapot is one of those cream tea that serves cream teas, light snacks and a wide range of specialized teas and coffees. The patio garden around the back is an absolute solar trap when good weather!

Lavender tea rooms – Etal
The small villages of Ford and Etal at the end of Northumberland are possibly the most beautiful in the county. With reminiscences of the popular towns of Cotswold, it is a surprise that more visitors are not heading here, although perhaps we should keep it a little secret. Some cabins and the Black Bull pub still have their straw roofs that justify a visit in their own right! Lavender tea rooms offer soft drinks inside a building of all the purpose that also houses the town store and the post office.
Drift Cafe – Cresswell
At the southern end of Duridge Bay, you will find drift coffee just to the other side of the dunes. This is the perfect place to cool off for a summer day on the beach or to heat up with a coffee after a charming winter walk. The homemade Lima cake is one that should not miss the fish and fries you can eat on a two -story bus! Dogs are welcome outside.
Earl Gray – Howick House
It would not have been correct to compile a list of the best coffees in Northumberland without referring to coffee at Howick Hall, the ancestral home of Earls Gray. Yes, the famous Earl Gray tea is named after the second count that called this beautiful buildings house. To access coffee, you must pay the entry rate of £ 11, since you cannot access the gardens without it. Therefore, it will solve a relatively expensive pot of Earl Gray (although other teas are available) but could not order one, right? The views of the gardens are also beautiful.
Barter Books – Alnwick
One of the best things to do when visiting Alnwick is to visit the barter books; One of the largest second -hand libraries in the United Kingdom was located inside the beautiful and old Victorian train station. Once you get away from the many corridors of the books, go to Buffet Cofe coffee to obtain Rarebit, chips and all its usual offers of tea, coffee and soft drinks. It is not the biggest coffees, so prepare to wait for a table.
THE EFFEE – Hadrian’s wall
The potter is the starting point for most Visitors of the Hadrian wall with a lot of educational information about the history of the area. It is free to enter, so I would recommend that everyone between that reason, but also enjoy the views from the roof, so that the little ones explore the ‘playscape’ and are supplied in local products.
Whether it needs soft drinks after a long walk along Hadrian’s wall or preparing for the day in the morning, coffee and oven once made they serve everyone. There is everything, from full English breakfasts and breakfast sandwiches throughout the day to cakes, lunches of Plowman and the afternoon teas for two!

Bertram’s – Warkworth
I know that I have already referred to some villages as the most beautiful in Northumberland, but now I will do it again; Warkworth, with its imposing Castle and the Hoseshoe river in the form of Hosshoe, is one of my favorite places to visit in Northumberland. Bertram’s, at the north end of the main street, is a charming cozy place for breakfast, cakes, strong tea and soft and silky coffees.
The fox running – Felton
Fox Running has expanded in Northumberland in recent years, but the original in Felton has excellent criticisms with exceptional views in the Coquet River. The afternoon tea here should not be lost with cakes as large as you have seen more cake slabs and fresh buns.
Nelson’s in the Park – Swarland
Nelson in the park is in a small lovely environment next to a children’s play area in the town of Swarland. Waitn large coffee cups, incredible hot chocolates, huge cake slabs and even larger sandwiches. This is a popular coffee for cyclists, it is friendly with dogs and, with the game area literally outside, it is great for families with children who need to burn some energy!
Alnmouth Scotts – Alnmouth
Alnmouth Scotts is a small bright Deli in this lovely coastal town at the mouth of the Aln River. It can be a bit expensive, but there are not many places in Northumberland as good as this for coffee (of pilgrims in Holy Island), cakes (I’m talking about takeoffs and cream paste), newly made sandwiches and general products of Delicatessen!

That concludes my list of the best coffees in Northumberland, although, of course, I know that many of you will have recommendations from other coffees and thoughts on which I have previously included. I will undoubtedly add to this list with time while I review more and more coffees to spend time in this exceptional corner of England.
