Are you looking for the best place to detect flourish blue peaks in Durham? Do not seek beyond the impressive Houghall Woods on the outskirts of Durham’s City Center.
Houghall Woods is well known to Durham’s locals, not only for beautiful scenic walks, a launch of stones in the city, but for the incredible exhibition for the flowering bells every spring. We have been visiting Houghall Woods for several years throughout the year, but we always make a special visit in the spring to see carpets of blue violet birds under the trees. Half of all the bells in the world are here in the United Kingdom, but we all have local favorite locations for us and, at least for me, that is Hoghall Woods. Certainly, one of Durham’s most beautiful places to see the bells, if not the northeast!
If you have not heard of Houghall Woods before, don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll be inspired to visit Durham on your next trip. Houghall Woods is technically famous for a very different reason thanks to an eagle eye walker who allegedly saw Dominic Cummings Acting the beauty of the forest during the COVID-19 block! Who can blame it when Bluebells look so good? Good?

Where to find Houghall Woods?
You can find Houghall Woods a few miles south of the center of the city of Durham between the botanical gardens and the Sports Center of the University of Durham. It may sound like a strange place to find such a beautiful forest, but, once you get to the forest, you will feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We always parked in the free main parking lot just behind Amaani in the Pumphouse (a great Indian restaurant) and walk south along the shore of the Wear River, passing the stables Houghall before reaching Houghall Woods. I added a map below to show the location of Houghall Woods, but Google will be your friend or communicate and I will give you more information!

Steps in Houghall Woods
There are numerous walks around the south of Durham found in Houghall Woods, but we have generally followed a circular route of around 1.5 miles, beyond the stables, following the road in the direction of the clock’s needles before cutting south through a field to re -unite the road to the side of the river wear. For those with a little more appetite for walking, there is a great 2.8 mile route here Or you can map a route to Burnhall Woods (one of my favorite places for an early dog walk in the morning in Durham) or throughout the part of the part of the English roadThe English section of the pilgrimage Camino de Santiago.

When do Bluebells flourish in Houghall Woods?
The bells generally flourish, according to Woodland Trust (suddenly I have not become a flower expert), from the end of March to the beginning of May, but can vary from one year to another. Apparently, if spring is soft (it seems that it is always!), Then the Bluebells will bloom before. Therefore, there will never be a perfect time to say exactly when the Bluebells will bloom in Houghall Woods unfortunately. If he is a resident in the Northeast or Durham, watch social networks, since he will often see photos of Bluebells suddenly appearing from nothing, which means that the show must have begun or will be imminent. Of course, if you are a local, you can enjoy walks regularly, especially if you have a dog that will undoubtedly love it in Houghall Woods, and you will be the first to know when they have flourished.
I would probably also warn that I have noticed that everything seems to be delayed a few weeks or less here in the northeast cold of England. For example, in 2021, the Bluebells did not bloom until the end of May!

I hope you have given you all the inspiration you need to visit Houghall Woods this spring to see the beautiful flower sands! If you know any other place, perhaps even better, to detect the bells in the northeast or further, let me know in the comments below.
