Fujifilm 18-55 mm F/2.8-4 Lens review: a reliable lens for travel photography [2024]

[ad_1]

Usually, it is a main type of lens, it is time to see a fujifilm stellar zoom lens for my travel photography. This is my fujifilm lenses 18-55 mm f/2.8-4.

Since I became a convert from Fujifilm in 2016, I have been a main type of lens. A main lens was there for me at all times with a firm hand on my shoulder, either for travel photography, wedding photography or simply daily life, I have become accustomed to firing a focal length at the same time. Now I will admit that this has sometimes become frustrating, since it has led to numerous lens changes only to obtain ‘the shot’ as my mind sees it. A minute I will want to shoot with my reliable Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4 and then I will want something a bit different. Indecision is not great, is it so!

After my first press trip abroad to Lithuania in July 2023, I finally admitted that shooting alone is not a “badge of honor” or something to continue at all costs. I love taking things calmly when I travel; For example, I will spend half of a photographic walk with a lens before changing. It makes you think about what you are filming and I find that I have always left perfectly happy with the images. However, in the aforementioned press trip (which included cycling around the field), I had no time to be demanding about what lens I would create the best opportunity at a given time: I had to have the opportunity and advance, which meant that something could easily get lost. That is not ideal at all, so I returned to the drawing board.

Enter the Fujifilm 18-55 mm F/2.8-4.

I am still very firmly in the opinion that the main lenses offer another level in terms of image quality and consistency for my photography style, however, now I am more than open to enter a zoom lens for travel photography. I have had zoom lenses before and I absolutely loved them (the Fujifilm 10-24mm f/4 and Fujifilm 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8) but I have not tried any Fujifilm offer in the most standard ‘standard’ focal range range.

Bought at the end of 2023, now I have had a few months to put this tested lens. This is my fujifilm lenses 18-55 mm f/2.8-4.

Fujifilm 18-55m f/2.8-4 Lenso

From Lithuania, I have been on another press trip, although this time to Sicily followed by a family vacation for Montenegro. These have been the perfect trips to try the Fujifilm 18-55 mm. As with any new lens, I only really worry about some things; Image quality, automatic approach speed and, something that is a bit difficult to transmit in words, but how does it feel? Does it want to run the house and shoot with nothing?

I am not one to immerse myself in the specifications and all that, so please do not expect me to concentrate on that here! What I will do is briefly spend my thoughts about this lens, what I like, what I don’t like and share many photos that I hope you enjoy.

First, it is worth noting that this lens is now almost 12 years old. In this modern era, that is practically vintage. There are many other newer zoom lenses that sit around this focal distance and, with rumors of a replacement due to an imminent launch, why did I decide to make a leap in this lens? Well, it is cheap: I collected a copy used for around £ 250 and has constantly received enthusiastic criticism despite being labeled as a ‘kit lens’. This is not a kit lens.

Positive

Let’s talk first about the image quality, okay? I am very impressed with the image quality of this small lens. The images that I have been obtaining are absolutely perfect for my ‘transfording’ photography style and to create the images that (from now on) will be throughout this blog. I say this with the greatest respect, but I love it for my ‘ordinary’ images. Those who will fill my travel guides, my itineraries, all the information publications that I produce here.

Obviously, I will publish many images here, but I feel free to spend time looking at my Sicily content: I love the way in which the images of the Fujifilm from 18 to 55 mm feel good along with what I would call the ‘Bangers’ produced by the Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4. However, they do not misunderstand me, some of my favorites ever Photos with this lens were taken.

Having F/2.8 at the wider end is an advantage for portraits, but I have mainly used the lens around F/4 to try to guarantee that the photos are as clear as possible. I will reach one of my problems with the sharpness in the negative section below.

I discovered that the lens also focuses super rapidly, which is always excellent to incorporate people in travel and street photography. A rhythm has not really lost and even, I have almost managed to take photos of my little one in the continuous approach. I am using the 18-55 mm Fujifilm lens in the Fujifilm X-T5, so that probably helps.

Another great feature of the 18-55 mm Fujifilm is the stabilization of the optical image that, when combined with IBIS of Fujifilm X-T5, means that it can shoot with slow-shutdown speeds without affecting the sharpness. I shot around 1/80 to 55 mm with little light and I still came out with decent images.

Negative

As I mentioned earlier, one thing I have noticed is that some images are not clear from edge to edge, even with say f/8 up. It is mainly when I am filming a landscape but, when it appears, it bothers me! For example, I have taken some photos of the Sicilian mountains that seem perfectly clear to say the upper right corner. I am not sure if this is something that happens with this lens or if it is a problem with my copy. I mentioned that I bought this lens used in a seller in a good reputable Facebook group (the first time I bought a used, not MPB lens), so it may be that it has finished with a copy of Duff that someone has previously fallen …

I have read many reviews in this lens and have seen a lot of photographs and they all look exceptional, so I need to have careful thought about whether I try another copy with the hope that it was only me.

Apart from that, to be fair, I only have very minor shelters who are rectified when buying much more expensive and heavy glasses, such as missing climate resistance and maybe want something a bit broader, maybe. I think I’m just trying to think about something. This is not a red badge lens, of course, but it is a wonderful kit that should be in everyone’s camera bag.

General thoughts

OK. I think it’s time to admit it. I love myself a zoom lens, especially when it is as good as the Fujifilm 18-55 mm f/2.8-4. Without indecision, I can easily obtain multiple angles/crops of a subject with the turn of one hand.

Bar my smaller complaint with sharpness (warned with the fact that I probably bought a used duff lens), I would not hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone with a Fujifilm chamber (even in 2024!); Whether you are just starting or if you are an experienced travel photographer. The lens is light, reliable and more than capable. If I love it, I am convinced that you will also do it!

There are other newer lenses, as I mentioned earlier, some with a fixed opening and a slightly wider and longer range (Fujifilm 16-80 mm f/4), but at the moment it is 18-55 mm f/2.8-55 mm works for me at least until 2024.
