How to spend a day in Limassol, Cyprus

[ad_1]

The second largest city in Cyprus, Limassol combines coastal walks and luxurious tourist centers with a historical center and traditional chipriot restaurants. Here is my guide to spend a day in Limassol.

Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus after the capital, Nicosia, on the southern coast of the island. It is practically halfway between paphos in the West and Ayia Napa & protar in the east, which means that spending a day in Limassol is simple no matter where you stay.

The bustling city of Limassol offers something for everyone; Whether you are looking to explore the historic old town, marvel at the pristine super yachts in the sports port, party until the sun rises or wandered slowly along a seap.

All Cyprus visitors should spend at least one day in Limassol, although it is probably not the place to stay if you are looking for a resort style city with golden sand beaches. That said, there are some beautiful hotels on the coast that apparently extend more and more with the ongoing development in the city.

When I was a child, Limassol was the place we would visit for our large food store, for a new skateboard or adidas superstar coaches that were fashionable in 2002. Let’s be sincere, Limassol is a relatively common city for most chipriotas who, however, use this guide, what it should do in the best way to do in the first time.

One day in Limassol

Old helmet

In my opinion, each visit to Lionssol must begin in the old town and its narrow sinuous streets. Some of the buildings may be crumbled, but that simply adds to the charm of this area. I recommend wandering, navigating in stores, taking photos of the beautiful architecture that stops only to enjoy the bars and restaurants that extend to the pavement. It is dusty, it is hot and the smell of leather persists in every corner.

There are also many hidden alleys in the old town, so you will never know what you can find. I loved the one who had a beautiful view that led to the great mosque.

Layassol Castle

In the heart of the old town is the medieval castle of Limassol. While the current castle dates back to the 16th century, it is said that Richard The Lionheart married Berengaria de Naverre on this site crowning her the Queen of England. The castle houses the Medieval Museum of Cyprus that, for those who enjoy museums, is an excellent way to learn more about the history of this island.

Marine Limassol

Limassol Marina is a modern development to the south of the old town, beyond the most incredible rubber tree you have ever seen, full of high -end stores, restaurants and bars, luxury villas and super yachts. The sports port opened in 2014 and is an example of the continuous development of Chipre. I do not necessarily believe that Cyprus has lost its charm with this type of development (however, seeing skyscrapers in Limassol is strange), it is clear that Cyprus is changing with the influx of money.

Anyway, you must visit the sports port and reflect on what life would be like for those rich enough to live in one of the villas. I certainly prefer the old town for bars and restaurants, but you cannot complain about the views here if you feel like a drink with views of the sports port of La Calm.

Walk through the Paseo Marítimo

The promenade molos lined with palm trees is a lovely place to walk, especially as the temperature cools. There are playgrounds, corridors through water characteristics, springs that extend towards the sea, in addition to coffees and restaurants. It is always a great idea to visit the Paseo Marítimo; One of the first places my daughter Evelyn really started standing!

All kinds of people enjoy the ride in Molos every day, from families to runners, this is one of the best things to do in Limassol. If someone ever interested in meeting, I remember that in 2001 or 2022 he saw Colin McRAe limping home to finish a stage here in a Ford Focus that was practically destroyed!

Enjoy a frappe of the natives

It is said that it is one of the best Limassol coffee shops, natives can be found in the old town that serves specialized coffee, sandwiches and freshly baked products in a minimalist place. Perfect for digital nomads or tourists who pass, take a flat target and feel outside the corner or, my favorite option, take a frappe to carry and continue wandering through the streets of the old town.

Dine in Lounge Cafe ouge

There are many excellent places to eat in Limassol, mainly centered on the square in the old town, but we run into Lounge Cafe per capricho thanks to Evelyn’s desire to eat dead at 12 pm every day. Routines huh?

I am usually a type of “in advance” research, since I hate nothing but experience bad food and/or service. I never like to get caught in a tourist trap, but, fortunately, our 10 -second check still works and the food surprised us here in Lounge Cafe Ousia. We devour a Falafel and Chicken Kebab wrap; Perfect to refuel after a long trip on the old road from Paphos and prepare one day in Limassol.

Wine Festival

Since 1961, for two weeks in September (2023 – October), the famous Limassol Wine Festival takes place in the municipal gardens. Tickets are completely affordable (I am speaking as € 5) and it is treated with unlimited samples to the wine of vineyards in Cyprus. Next to the wine, there is live music, dance, theatrical performances and cheap local food. No one leaves the wine festival in the same way, but that is part of the fun, right? If you drink alcohol and you like wine, that’s …

To spend more time on Limassol?

While for me, one day in Limassol is enough to be able to experience the best things to do, there are many who enjoy spending more time here. If you have the opportunity to spend more time in Limassol, or you have a car to plan your own road trip, there are some nearby places that I recommend visiting it.

Kourion archaelogical site

Date from 8bc, the archeogical site in Kourion (or Curium) is one of the most beautiful that I have had the pleasure of visiting. Perched on a cliff on the Mediterranean Sea, less than 20 km west of Limassol, Kourion once was once the largest city in Cyprus.

On a one -day excursion, whether for yourself or through a tourism company, you can explore the ruins of Kourion in the exceptional views from the Ampitheatre (which directly faces the beach below), magnificent mosaic floors and several other structures of the Roman era, including the house of gladiators, the Roman baths and the house of the 4th century of Achilles.

The site is open from 8:30 am to 5 pm in winter and until 7 pm in summer. Be sensitive since there is little shadow, so keep hydrated, wear a hat and a sun cream and keep out of the sun in the peak hours.

For the most adventurers among us, you could try your hand to hang the cliff to the beach.

Apollo Hylatas Temple

On the way between Kourion and the base of the army in Episkopi (a well -traveled path to me in the direction of school in the year 7 and 8), it is a little -known archaeological site of the temple of Apollo Hylatos. Faithful to the form, it was one of my ‘most prominent aspects’ of our road trip by Cyprus. Forgive me, had to be done.

The site is only small but has beautiful views along an old cobbled road to the last remaining part of the original temple.
