On the banks of the Lachlan River in the rural area of Nueva Gales del Sur is the city of Cowra. If you have already achieved it here or planned in the future, you will want to know the best things to do in Cowra, right?
As part of my wife and I, the excursion in the new South Wales regional in our motorhome, Cowra was a city where we spent some time grateful for its location between Young and Orange; Two places where we are left alone due to taking care of pets in trusted houses or working on a farm pickinging plums. Interestingly, the highest temperature we experience in the full nine months that we were in Australia, was here in Cowra; Almost 43 degrees Celsius. We became extremely well known with McDonalds thanks to their frozen drinks and air conditioning, although trying to sleep in a metal box of a motorhome was extremely difficult.
Cowra is just a small city with a population of less than 10,000 people but has an extremely unique history that deserves to be known. I strongly recommend visiting and staying some nights, either in one of the many camps or motels, and immersed directly in the exploration. Let’s look at the best things to do in Cowra.
7 things to do in Cowra, New South Wales
Cowra prisoner of war field
The city of Cowra, believes or not, is mainly known thanks to its War Prison Field of World War II that housed many Japanese and Italian prisoners of war. That is only enough, of course, for a city to be recognized by but, what comes next, is. On August 5, 1944, at 1:50 am, more than 1,000 Japanese prisoners launched a massive escape; The greatest prisoner of war in modern military history! During the attempts, 231 prisoners and 5 Australian soldiers sadly lost their lives. Of those who managed to escape, each and every one of the prisoners were recaptured only one week later.
Today, you can visit the mysterious and ghostly silent rich ruins of the camp with a replica of guard and signs that help you visualize how it should have been during World War II. Go to the Cowra Visiting Center in the city to watch a camp model of the camp and watch a revealing video that tells the story of the break.

Pow water tank mural
Unfortunately, these were not completed at the time of my visit, but I am a fan of street art and the continuous approach of Australia for the water tank/works of art of grain silo. With views of the Cowra Pow camp, there are two huge water tanks with murals that represent a young Wiradjuri and the history of the Pow camp.
Japanese garden and cultural center
As a means to solidify and commemorate peace and reconciliation between Japan and Australia, the Cowra Japanese and cultural garden center was built during the seventies and eighties. This is now a beautiful place to visit and is definitely one of the best things to do in Cowra. There are 12.5 acres of impressive Japanese inspirational gardens that include a copy of the first walking garden built by the Japanese Shogun Tokugawa Leyasu, two lakes, waterfalls and a real outdoor tea house and a Bonsai house. You can even feed the Koi tent on the lake! If you want to get more information about Japan, there is a cultural center and a gift job where you can buy Japanese products.
Japanese war cemetery
The only Japanese war cemetery in Australia is here in Cowra that contains the tombs of the 231 prisoners of war killed during the rupture, as well as 292 tombs (total 523) of Japanese crew, soldiers and others that died during World War II. There is also a separate war cemetery that is the place of rest for four of the Australian solidaders who were killed during the break. This is a must if you want to present your respects.

Australia’s World Peace Bell
You will find the world peace bell here in Cowra in the Civic Square. Made of melted coins from 106 member countries of the United Nations, this is apparently the only peace bell outside a city in the world. Given the 1944 events, it is understandable that Cowra openly shows his contribution to world peace. Go to the bell of La Paz to have the opportunity to play the bell for yourself.
Railway Sociedad del Valle de Lachlan
In Cowra’s heart, you will find the part of the Cowra Historic Railway of the Lachlan Valley Railway Society. Celebrating the golden era of railway trips, you can see many steam engines and heritage diesel and even travel on board as well. Heritage’s trains walks are executed last Saturday and Sunday of each month (adults $ 15, children $ 10). If you feel elegant, book a seat aboard the Scone train where you can relax in a 1930 living room and enjoy a devishire tea for $ 15pp last Sunday of each month.
The heritage deposit in Cowra is open from Thursday to Monday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and the entrance costs $ 10 for adults and $ 6 for children. There are discounts for family tickets and children under 5 are free.
Bellevue Hill reserve lookout
Go to the lookout on the top of Bellevue Hill to see the most incredible views of Cowra and Rural Nueva Wales del Sur. Any visit to Cowra would be incomplete without having his eyes from here, especially if he has the opportunity to enjoy a sunset. You can also park on the top, which is exactly what we did, since it was too hot to walk!
