Fujifilm 56 mm F/1.2 – A long -term review

[ad_1]

Now I had the Fujifilm 56 mm F/1.2 for just over two years, so I thought it was finally time to review what is announced as one of the best Fujifilm lenses. As with all my team reviews, I like to be as honest as possible and give it directly. I know that when I played with the idea of a new lens, I need to know as much as possible; It is not about specifications, but how it really is in the real world.

I am not only writing this for the benefit that others consider buying this lens, but also for me. As you will see below, I am not 100% convinced in this lens and I am not sure that I have really click with me or if I have really clicks. I am probably like any other camera user in the sense that I am still, and I will probably always be, in the search for the perfect configuration with a budget. Of course, if I could, I would love to own each lens and fujifilm camera so that I can choose what is better on a certain day, but this is not how normal people we live unfortunately.

My Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2 review

My photography style

For those who have not followed my blog since the first days or do not follow me on Instagram, I would say that I am a guy who loves a walk lens and, the track is in the name, I love travel photography. The trip covers a wide range of photography styles; You have to have perfect lenses for architecture, street and portraits. The rapid approach, the weather resistance, the size and quality of the image are always the first on my list.

The most obvious question is then, why did I buy the Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2? I can tell you now, that I did not mainly bought this lens for my travel photograph. After spending 10 months traveling and having a rest of a career in the law, I returned to the United Kingdom with ambitions to convert photography into more than a hobby. I quickly received reservations for weddings and, therefore, the investigation began to the perfect portrait lens.

Is the Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2 the perfect portrait lens?

I will come out and I will say it now that I would probably go so far to say that this is the perfect portrait lens for the Fujifilm X series. 56 mm (85 mm in the complete picture) is a bright focal length for full length portraits, as well as shots in the head. Combine that with a super fast opening of f/1.2 and will have an incredibly dreamy lens. The preferred lenses of the wedding photographer seem to be 23 mm and 56 mm in two separate bodies and, of the few weddings that I have filmed, which has worked brilliantly.

The photographs produced by this lens are beautiful, there is no doubt and I am sure it will be and should be a basic element in many photographers. However, although I really appreciate what this lens can do, I am starting to ask me if In fact I need it. I have a very stable and pleasant job in the law and my main photography style is aimed at traveling instead of weddings or portraits. For the weddings I have reserved, I wonder if there are other appropriate lenses that would do the job just as well. Do the inconveniences below exceed the quality of the image?

The inconveniences

Taking into account that I have two X-T2, a quite old camera body, encounter that in real world stages the automatic approach is very slow, especially with little light. In some situations, especially when the movement is involved, I find it close to useless. It may be me, but it is too slow to the reliable automatic approach. This is not really a problem with portraits in a certain sense, but with documentary style photography, it may take off. However, I have heard that in the newest cameras of Fujifilm, the automatic approach is much faster, so, hopefully, this will be a great improvement. If I buy the lens again, I would definitely try first and fortunately Fujifilm would offer a free 48 -hour rental.

Let’s talk about f/1.2. This is a great point of sale for this lens and, when you nail the approach, you can see why. You buy a lens like this to shoot par, but do not forget that the focal plane is so narrow that you can, more frequently what you think, Miss Focus.

Finally, I have noticed that when shooting in color, the images are much more great than other lenses in similar situations. I always discovered that I had to heat the images in the editing process even after firing JPEG.

The Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2 and travel photography

I am not sure that this lens has been designed to be an essential lens for a travel photographer. I wanted to see if I could bring the images of high quality portraits and combine that with a walk around the Telephoto lens. I tried the hardest, but unfortunately, for me, it has not worked.

I have some great images of Edinburgh and Florida with this lens (I mean that some of the images of the Muscle Cars American are crazy) but when Fujifilm offers the 50 mm of 50 mm f/2; A lens that is much smaller, lighter, cheaper, is climate resistant and has a fast automatic approach, my mind tells me to go with the 50 mm!

My favorite lenses at this time are the Fujifilm 16 mm F/1.4 in an X-T2 and the Fujifilm 35 mm F/1.4 in another. For me, that is the perfect travel photography configuration and, with 35 mm, you can still obtain absolutely beautiful portraits. I have been seriously considering if the Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2 has a place in my bag and, certainly for travel photography, that Fujifilm 50 mm f/2 calls me my name.

Conclusion: Do I keep or sell the Fujifilm lens 56 mm f/1.2

I am quite happy to have found the time to write this publication, since it has personally made my decision a little easier. I am not a professional photographer and most of my images are based on traveling. I love a main lens that can hit the camera and cover a wide range of situations.

While the Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2 is an absolute dream lens, it comes with its inconveniences and must be aware of them. In the original version of this publication, I wrote that it hurt me to give up this lens, but there were, practically speaking, better options available for me. However, almost immediately after writing this publication, I reserved at some more weddings, so it seemed impossible to sell 56 mm; He stays with me until today and I promise that I will try to shoot with him more day to day.

I checked the Fujifilm 90 mm f/2, but finally I decided that it is not a lens that I need to buy, Hello Cost of Living Crisis 2022, but I can definitely see a place for the Fujifilm lens of 50 mm f/2 maybe next to the power Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2. The weddings I filmed recently reminded me that once you have the Fujifilm 56 mm f/1.2, it is not a lens you can sell. It’s lovely.

I promise you, the Fujifilm 56 mm F/1.2, which I will use much more regularly and continue persevering with you in terms of my travel photography!
