A lovely city located between Kotor Bay and the dramatic mountains, Herceg Novi in Montenegro offers a lot for a travel photographer. This is my visual guide for street photography in Herceg Novi.
For this entry in the series ‘On The Streets’, I will take you to the beautiful city of Herceg Novi in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. This was our first visit to Montenegro and I would only like to have visited before! Despite being a small country, you have old cities listed by UNESCO soaked in history, dramatic mountain range and impressive coasts throughout the Adriatic Sea and inside Kotor’s bay. Ah, and you also get that beautiful Mediterranean climate; What is not loving?
This was a family party with our daughter Evelyn, 18 months at that time, which worked to include the countries in the fourth and fifth of Evelyn in her list while we fly to Croatia and travel through the border. 5 countries before 2 is not bad!
Anyway, let’s focus on photography and Herceg Novi in particular. The small town of Herceg Novi is located between the Bay of Kotor (overlooking the Adriatic Sea) and Monte Orjen, as you can imagine, becomes steep very quickly. It is just a matter of kilometers from the borders of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Once you take a look at the photos next, you will see exactly why I fell in love with this lovely coastal city.
In terms of the photos, there were many obviously beautiful views throughout the city and some “mandatory capture” locations, including the Forte mare (sea strength), Kanli Kula (another fort at the highest point), as well as along the promenade.
My series ‘On The Streets’ takes us through the world with short publications focused only on my unique travel and street photography style. The series will never be complete, but here is a look where I have covered so far:
Ok, now is the time for a virtual tramp. This is my opinion about street photography in Herceg Novi.

The details
First, it is the camera: the Fujifilm X-T5. I have used this as my main camera since its launch and I have no reason to consider anything else. I think it’s perfect.
In terms of choice of lenses, I was on family vacation, so I took a good variety of lenses. I wanted to put the Fujifilm lens of 18-55 mm f/2.8-4 through its steps, since it was quite new to me, but of course I could not take the Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4. I left the Fujifilm 18 mm f/1.4, which was possibly a little crazy from me, but it meant that I could get the Fujifilm 16 mm f/1.4 from a professional rest.
I have explained all my thoughts about the ‘kit lens’ here, but I was surprised how reliable it was for travel photography. I am definitely not a type of zoom, I love all my cousins, but on a family vacation like this, with limited time for photographic walks and appropriate explorations, it worked perfectly.
