About a year ago, just before my first trip to the United States, I finally launched myself and got my hands in one of the Holy Gros de Fujifilm; he Fujifilm 16 mm f/1.4 lens. The question I can’t remember the answer is why? I already had the excellent 10-24 mm f/4 and used it mainly at the widest end. I had no real experience of the 16 mm focal distance, but, with my need for a wide ultra lens that would decrease, I decided to do everything possible. As always, this will not be a complete and detailed review, but simply my own personal impressions of the Fujifilm 16 mm f/1.4 along with many photos.
Since then, Fujifilm has launched a much more compact version of this lens, 16 mm f/2.8. While I have not had experience in that lens, I do not see absolutely not necessary now that I have the exceptional version F/1.4. The f/2.8 lens is substantially cheaper, smaller and lighter, attributes that normally for any travel photographer would be a decisive factor. For the reasons that I will arrive, despite the price of £ 899, despite the fact that this lens is a beast (yes, it is larger than 56 mm f/1.2!), I will never fall in love with this lens.

Focal length
During 10 months of travel, I almost widely used the 23 mm f/2 lens combined with the X-T2. I will still say that it is a perfect combination to travel. Not too wide, not too close, just. For weddings too, 23 mm is one of my favorite focal distances. The 16 mm focal length (equivalent to 24 mm in terms of complete picture) is not one with which I can say that I feel completely comfortable. I read many reviews explaining that it has long been getting used, but my initial impressions were exactly the opposite. I loved it during the first months, especially during my trip to Florida. Over time, I took a little detached and I discover that I am constantly cutting images to approach the subject. I have to keep reminding myself to approach this lens and, when you do, it really works.
I have been using this lens a bit for weddings (some as guests) also due to its incredible image quality and low light capabilities. For me, these qualities exceed my question in the focal distance and I have been able to produce some beautiful images. In recent months, unfortunately the lens has taken some rear seat only due to my most exceptional 35 mm purchase of 35 mm f/1.4. However, I can see the potential for my new travel photography kit to insist on the Fujifilm 16 mm f/1.4 in an X-T2 body and the Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4 in another. For weddings, 23 mm and 56 mm would continue to be the way to follow for me.
Image quality
Do not let my little concerns about the real focal distance discourage you. At all. The image quality, as I mentioned earlier, is out of this world. Although I suppose you could probably say that about most Fujifilm lenses. The sharpness is very good even when it is triggered in torque AF/1.4. The contrast is beautiful and there is a good amount of separation of subjects taking into account that it is a wide angle lens. Bakeh really also stands out for me; Making any busy background becomes practically impossible to notice. One of the most surprising things about this lens is its ability to concentrate super close. 15 cm from the focal plane to the subject is incredible and allows you to capture some really unique photos without looking for a macro lens. Another impressive feature that had not used before is the clutch mechanism for the manual approach. Instead of turning a dial on the front of your Fujifilm camera to change the manual approach, it literally pulls part of the lens towards you and leaves. Combined with the maximum aspects in the EVF viewfinder, the manual approach has never been easier.
In addition to all this, the lens is also climate resistant doing the Fujifilm 16 mm f/1.4 Practically a perfect travel photography lens.
While there are cheaper and smaller cheap options, sincerely, I still couldn’t look beyond this lens. Now, just to wait for the world to unlock so that this test can really put.
