Rainbow Beach is a small quiet city at the tip of the great Sandy National Park that is often visited to get to Fraser Island. Instead, decrease the speed, spend time here and let me show you the best things to do in Rainbow Beach, Queensland.
Rainbow Beach is a small and quiet beach city in Queensland about 250 km north of Brisbane and is a unique destination to visit. You will find golden beaches, rainbow arenas, cliff landscapes and easy access to the world’s largest sand island; K’hari (Fraser Island).
Whether you are planning a Brisbane weekend break or looking for epic destinations on its road trip on the east coast, it is definitely worth visiting Rainbow Beach. I have gathered my thoughts about the best things to do in Rainbow Beach to make sure to see exactly why you should not miss this hidden jewel.
Things to do in Rainbow Beach
Carlo sand
One of the most unique attractions in Rainbow Beach is Carlo’s sandy blow; Where the wind is constantly shaping the landscape that buries anything on its path with sand.
Carlo Sand Blow is at the top of Rainbow color cliffs and, after walking 600 meters from the parking lot through the bushes, you will find yourself in the middle of an incredible desert. The sand here covers more than 15 hectares!
You will want to walk towards the edge of the cliffs (please be careful and do not approach too much, it is dangerous!) To enjoy the impressive views along the coast and the sands and cliffs of colors of the rainbow.
Carlo’s sandy blow is only 1.5 km from the center of the rainbow beach and is easily accessible by car.

Colored sands
The cliffs throughout this coast are, possibly, the most beautiful cliffs in Australia thanks to the different sand tones that make up the pattern of natural stripes. It is said that there are about 72 different colors of sand that make up these cliffs; Isn’t it just crazy? We admire the cliffs from the upper part of Carlo’s sand, but you can see them closely and personal if you are on the beach. I was a little cloudy when we visited, but we still did many of the colors of the rainbows, to be fair, mainly deep red, yellow and brown.

4WD Tour
One of the best things to do in Rainbow Beach is to enjoy Great Beach Drive; either in your own 4WD or as part of a guided 4WD tour. You can take a tour from Rainbow Beach that sees it drive along the beach offering excellent views of colored sands, to the Double Island Point lighthouse and other areas of this beautiful coast. Some of the routes even include kayak with dolphins. Did you know that you can even drive on the beach from Noosa to Rainbow Beach? That is something that I would love to do a day too!
DELFINS IN TIN CAN BAY
There are not many places in Australia, maybe in the world, that you can feed the wild dolphins every morning like a clock. However, only 30 km from Rainbow Beach, there is Tin Can Bay, where you can do exactly that! In any way you do, Tin Can Bay is an obvious detour, since you have to go close to Rainbow Beach. I have written with many more details about the feeding of wild dolphins in Tin Can Bay, so verify that too!

K’Gari / Fraser Island
Given Rainbow Beach’s proximity to the southern end of the world’s largest sand island, it would be bad not to visit and experience all K’gari (Fraser Island) has to offer. There are many tours that arrive on the island from Rainbow Beach and enjoy all the views in the space of a full day or several days trips. We visited Fraser Island from Hervey Bay on a full day tour and we are absolutely impressed by its beauty. The most prominent aspects include the crystalline waters of Lake McKenzie, the beach road cruise, the 360 ° views from the Indian head and the shipwreck of Maheno. I have written in more detail about what we did on our one -day trip to Fraser Island, which is worth reading. I recommend, highly, I recommend reserving a tour to visit Fraser Island while in Rainbow Beach.

There then, just some of the best things to do in Rainbow Beach, which will undoubtedly make your visit memorable! This was a quiet but valuable detour on our road trip on the east coast between Noosa and Hervey Bay and I am very happy to have found time to stop here!
