The Troodos mountains are known as Chipre’s green heart and it is not difficult to fall in love with this region. A recent road trip allowed the family to explore the delights of the Troodos mountains in Cyprus and I am here to show him how incredible this area is.
I mentioned this several times on the blog, but I will not stop now. From 8 to 12 years old, he lived in Cyprus and this Mediterranean island still feels at home. I have good memories of driving on steep roads through the Troodos mountains, either to explore traditional villages or learn to ski in the winter. Now I have my own family and, after having returned to Cyprus in 2023, it would have been rude to not upload the mountains of Troodos.
The Mountains of Troodos are the largest mountain range of Cyprus with Mount Olympus that reaches a height of almost 2,000 meters above sea level. Mount Olympus is crowned with infamous white golf balls (radar stations) and, for me, he feels like the Gipre geographical center (it is not but you know); A kind of true north that means that you can work in this/west/south from. You can never miss in Cyprus, right?
You will find traditional chipriot peoples located in the hills, famous for the manufacture of wine, an abundance of monasteries and churches, in addition to an impressive nature everywhere. All the time the aroma of the pines supports the memories you create; The phenomenon of prost in full effect. The smell of the pines, wherever it is, always takes me home to the Troodos mountains.
Anyway, let’s go to the car and make a road trip through the Troodos mountains. Let me provide the perfect inspiration for your next trip to Cyprus.
A road trip through the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus
Omods
Omods is probably the jewel of the crown of the mountains of Troodos. It is the most picturesque town surrounded by mountains and vineyards, so it is probably that is why it attracts so many visitors every year. It is said that omods has been famous throughout history because of the wine that occurs here, so if you are looking for an introduction to the Chipriot wine, you will find it here. You will also find a medieval wine press if you also look for the historical side.
The monastery of Timios Stavros is the oldest in Cyprus and it is said that it houses a piece of the true cross that clearly elevates its importance. Be sure to walk throughout the monastery before enjoying the beauty of the church with its glass candlesticks (exactly like it was when I visited when I was a child twenty years ago).
I love the main street of omodos with its local taverns and stores; The perfect place to have coffee and see the world go. We have a little more deeply lunch in the town, going through narrow alleys before reaching Katoi. Emma had the Kleftiko lamb while he had the chicken kebab. Do not miss the small home alcohol shot at the end of your food. I had to verify that I was still fine to drive!
A warning warning if someone travels with a small baby/child, the main street of omodos is completely cobbled (cobbled from the old school), so it is not the best for the smallest strollers/strollers. I wish we would have used the bearer for Evelyn; It is much more practical.

Lofou
The people of LofouIn my opinion, it is a must on any trip to the mountains of Troodos. Between 1946 and 1986, the town was completely abandoned; A ghost town if you want. However, the buildings remained intact and since then it has been restored beautifully. I remember visiting Lofou regularly as a child (we used to have a vegetarian mee perhaps in the Tavern of Lofou) and I am pleased to say that the people are as fascinating as twenty years ago. Fortunately, the people are still calm and can be the only person wandering the streets like us.
There are some restaurants to choose if you feel spicy or, if you like a beer, be curious and follow the yellow and black signs for the Lofou microceros. The cold beer bottle and a shadow seat were a welcome relief of the warm chipriot heat.

Troodos people
Troodos Village is the final destination for many visitors to the Mountains of Troodos. The town/resort is only 250 m below Mount Olympus, which is the highest point in Cyprus and is based around the beautiful square full of pines. There is not much here, except some restaurants and hotels, but given the impulse that you just completed, you deserve a little rest!
Troodos Village is the starting point for many hiking and cycling paths if you have energy, but it is in winter when things become a bit different. Did you know that it snows here from January to March and you can take the clues if you love a little ski? They are not the Alps, but there are not many places where you can go from a dip in the medication to ski in the snow in just a few hours. I first learned to ski here many years ago, but I think that accelerating the slopes on a bodyboard was more my style!
Mount Olympus
Mount Olympus is the highest point on Chipre Island to a total of 1,952 meters. Although it cannot reach the peak thanks to a military base, we conducted as close as possible to the F935 road before turning and enjoying the views from the point of view of the northwest. On a clear day, the point of view offers impressive views towards northern Cyprus and Nicosia (maybe if you interde).

Pano Platres and Caledonia Falls
While our most recent road trip did not cover Pano Platres and the serene Cathedia Falls, I would not hesitate to recommend a stop in the town of Pano Platres (I bought a laser pen on a school trip here when I was 11 years old, Oops) and the nearby waterfall. The path to Caledonia Falls begins in the trout farm and only has 3 km back on rocky ground. The waterfall is only 12 meters high, but it is a small lovely place and, if you dare, you can always cool down underwater too!
KYKKOS MONASTERY AND PATIOS Forest
Once again, we failed to find time on our road trip to visit the famous monastery of Kykkos and the Venetian bridges hidden in the Paphos Forest, this is something we have done before in a guided tour. Actually, this worked quite well as vividly memory the bus that was driving on incomplete land roads to take us to our destination and would probably not like to drive a paphos rental car.
The Kykkos monastery dates back to the eleventh century, is about 28 km northwest of the village of Troodos and is a climax of the mountains of Troodos. The architecture was impressive and it is easy to see why this is considered the richest monastery in the entire island.
Many tours will also stop in the Paphos Forest (which is a huge 70,000 hectares) that will allow them to embrace the natural beauty of cedars and Venetian historical bridges that were part of the old camel.
Car rental versus guided tour of the mountains of Troodos
Ok, I think I can answer with confidence this question now in terms of whether you should visit the Troodos mountains in a rental car you yourself or as part of a guided tour. Personally, I love to drive abroad, so I am more than happy to take the roads and create my own unique road trip. Driving yourself will allow much more freedom to add additional stops or stop quickly if you see another beautiful point of view. However, I will not lie, it was exhausting especially with a young child who did not like to sleep the whole trip. You need more time than you plan to drive through those mountains, so if you plan to drive yourself, be sure to activate early, have a complete gasoline tank and some good melodies. However, I can see the benefit of a guided tour and I enjoyed how free it was. They pick you up from your accommodation (I remember that we were collected just outside our hotel in Paphos) and you don’t have to worry about anything; You will be driver in the best views of the Mountains of Troodos. Correct! There are also many routes to choose from, so there will definitely be something for you.
