A pristine beach, the sun rise and wild kangaroos, what else can you ask for in Australia? In my view it’s definitely Worth Seeing The Kangaroos On The Beach At Cape Hillsborough in Queensland.
For anyone who plans a trip along the east coast of Australia, the idea of seeing kangaroos on the beach of Cape Hillsborough is something that should probably be in each list of desires for visitors. Whether as idyllic as you imagine in your mind, it is something we will appear, but now that we have done it, seeing the most famous Marsupial in Australia on the beach in Sunrise was an experience that we will remember forever.
However, this activity is quite controversial, since some say it was one of the best things they had done in Australia, while others left very disappointed. Let’s talk about that after giving it an overview first.
How to see kangaroos on the beach of Cape Hillsborough
Cape Hillsborough is located on the east coast of Australia in Queensland less than 50 km north of Mackay and about 125 km south of Airlie Beach. Many travelers will completely go to Cape Hillsborough completely arriving at Airlie Beach sooner rather than later to experience one of the best things (almost surely) in Australia; Navigating the Whitsunday Islands. For Those that are in Charge of Their Own Trip, Those of Us Who Are On A Slow Road Trip From Sydney To Cairns (Or Vice Versa), I Would Say That Cape Hillsborough is definitely Worth A Short Stop.
This Queensland area is absolutely impressive; Think of eucalyptus forests, light blue ocean and tropical climate. Since the Cape Hillsborough National Park is a bit out of the main A1 road and that there is an experience of ‘Do not miss’ so close, this area can be quieter and, therefore, extremely peaceful. Perfect for a Relaxing Walk Along The Beach Or Through the Rainforest. However, remember that this is crocodile territory, so it is not recommended to swim!

To see the famous kangaroos who arrive for their breakfast at dawn, you must go to Casuarina Beach in the Cape Hillsborough National Park and the tourist/caravan park of the same name. Every morning you can expect to see a small amount of kangaroos and Wallabies enter the beach for its feeding of seeds and algae.
I cannot remember where we stayed the night before in the motorhome (probably a free camp on the unf anrition side), but we woke up at 5 in the morning, we drove while it was still black and arrived before the other tourists had wandered from the camp. I imagine that it would have been much easier to pay a launch in the camp ($ 42 for one night with power), but every saved dollar meant that we could travel so a little more.
While we had experienced the entire kangaroo/human relationship in many Australian camps, we expected a slightly more ‘natural’ experience in Cape Hillsborough. However, that was not what we got and that is why many people are disappointed.
Kangaroos in this region probably fed from the beach, but now the situation is completely “made by man”, including the placement of cones around the beach from which the kangaroo breakfast is served. Some of the visitors, the two kangaroos we saw, were also raised by hand in the tourist park, so do not wait for the most natural experience.

When we visited, Sun forgot to light his ascent, so we find a cloudy and boring brightness that could easily have been confused with the east coast of England if it were not for the kangaroos and the Wallabies jumping. That said, it was still a great and unique photo opportunities that I made sure to make the most. For photographers, I discovered that my telephoto (Fujifilm 55-200 mm) It worked better not to get too close to wildlife.
Unfortunately, even in this remote part of Australia, you could not escape from tourists who would do anything for a selfie with a kangaroo. Tourists definitely surpassed wildlife in number that decided to join us that morning, so, without wanting to overcome our welcome, we left after not too much and headed to Airlie Beach.
I told you that I would explain why many people are going to see the kangaroos on the beach of Cape Hillsborough disappointed, but, if you have plenty of time and enter fully prepared, then I would say that it definitely visit Cape Hillsborough and I am sure you will have a great time.
