My first impressions of the unreal lens Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 [2024]

[ad_1]

2024 begins with another new lens for my collection; The Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8. This is one of the most made lenses for a good reason and these are my first impressions of the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8.

We are going to start, with a review of lenses of the latest incorporation into my collection of Fujifilm lenses constantly growth? A long time ago I fainted on this lens, the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8, a quick teleobjective zoom lens to mainly raise my travel photography but also my wedding photography. I am a lover of the main lenses, but more recently I see the benefit of bringing zoom lenses in the fold.

In 2017/2018, I traveled for 10 months through Australia and around Southeast Asia with two zoom lenses and a cousin. The Fujifilm 55-200 mm f/3.5-4.8 was my teleobjective of choice due to its size, although the images never left me speechless. It was a reliable and relatively cheap lens, so it made a lot of sense at that time. Finally I sold that lens during Covid-19, since I was not seeing any action given the state of traveling in general and it was not a lens that could work in other aspects of my photograph.

We quickly advance until the beginning of 2024 and I decided that it was the perfect time to add a good telephoto lens to my camera bag and, in Fujifilm, you cannot see beyond the Fujifilm of grade grade 50-140 mm f/2.8. The lens is an attempt to coincide with the incredible (and possibly unmatched) Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8. Obviously, that is a complete frame lens, so we cannot compare it as, but what we have here for us Fujifilm shooters is a more than good equivalent for all our teleobjective needs.

This is my first ‘red flagship’ lens and quality is absolutely exceptional. If you don’t read anymore, I just know that I thought I had seen everything from Fujifilm lenses in the last 8 years, but this has flown out of the water.

First impressions of Fujifilm 50-140 mm F/2.8

Pros

Clear quality of AF / image

Honestly, I think this is the most acute Fujifilm lens I have used. It is crazy even open AF/2.8. Acute tactics. The image quality is incredible and has never impressed me more at such an early stage of the use of a lens.

You know what it is when you save, you get a lens with which you have dreamed for a long time just to be mediocre or may not live up to the very high standards that it establishes. Well, the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 is a lens that, for once, far exceeds my expectations. There is not much more to say that you can’t see when looking at the images, so I will let my photos speak.

Internal zoom

This is actually one of the best characteristics of this lens in my opinion: when it approaches from 50 mm to 140 mm, the lens does not extend in any way. I love that everything is contained inside the lens and nothing has to excel when you want that additional reach.

Fast approach

For what I have experienced so far, I have noticed that the focus rate in the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 is quite fast without real problems to talk about. He had difficulty concentrating when he faced the clouds at sunset that he will see photos in the article and was not outstanding when I changed to the continuous approach combined with the detection of the face for street photography, but I did it to the most likely user’s error!

Constant opening f/2.8

The constant opening F/2.8 is a great positive for this lens taking into account that we are extending up to 140 mm; This simply cannot be achieved with any other lens that produces Fujifilm. The closest thing you can get is with the Fujifilm 90 mm f/2, but there is something about firing f/2.8 to 140 mm that is very pleasant for the eyes to be beautiful funds out of focus.

With f/2.8 throughout the range, this means that the lens lends itself to shoot in lower light situations regardless of the focal distance you need. I see that this is really useful when weddings are triggered, for example, where you need all possible light collection capabilities, but you also want to step back and approach.

Ois

The Fujifilm 50-140 mm F/2.8 has an optical image stabilization (OIS), which essentially fights the camera shake to make sure that, particularly when it approaches 140 mm or use more slow shutter speeds, it is less likely to have a blurred image. When combined with a camera with IBIS, such as Fujifilm X-T5, honestly, you will probably never experience blurred images (except for focus problems). I really need to prove how slow I can reduce the speed of the shutter, but I have seen through the investigation that others have achieved 1/18 of a second!

One thing I have noticed is that I can “see” physically the OIS that works when the camera is in continuous approach mode, but I can’t necessarily see it when I am in a single approach. Is that normal? Honestly, I have no idea. However, I would say that I have no reason to suspect that the OIS does not work depending on how focus mode I choose.

Premium construction quality

This is the first lens of ‘red badge’ that I have used from Fujifilm, so I expected no less than an exceptional construction and premium and, fortunately, that is exactly what you get with the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 (except the lens bell that I have immediately eliminated …). It is just a high quality solid metal, a very soft zoom and a beautiful ‘click’ opening ring. I also love the tripod’s neck, even though I really do not use a tripod, since it is excellent to help carry and balance perfectly with the Fujifilm X-T5 when it rests on a table, for example.

Climate resistance

With the quality of premium construction as above, it also obtains weathering resistance, which is brilliant for a lens that will see its fair share of different climatic conditions when traveling. I have not yet had the opportunity to try the weather resistance in this lens, but I have never had any problems with the lenses of other Fujifilm when it is outside, even during the Monzón season in Southeast Asia.

Cons

Weight / Size

Ok, you expected this to be direct to the top of the list of negatives for this lens. Yes, the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 is heavy (almost a kilo, 995 g) and yes, it is huge, but it does not necessarily look or feel out of place in the Fujifilm X-T5.

In terms of weight, I wanted to try this in the real world wandering through the streets of a city on a neck strap to see how I managed. I think I recorded about 5 miles in York on a cold February morning, but at no time I thought that carrying the lens/camera was unbearable. I want to say that it was absolutely charming when I quickly changed to the Fujifilm 35 mm f/1.4 for some shots, but I found myself supporting the lens with one hand while walking. I know that I will walk much more with future trips and breaks from the city, but I almost always bring a backpack if I need a little break. In the Fujifilm X-T5, the grip helped hold the camera combined with my other hand in the lens. If I had a smaller camera or a grip at all, I probably had difficulty sustaining it.

I would say that this lens will not be part of a Minimalist The configuration of the photograph given the size and weight, but the performance of the image is much more a game change for me, so I will happily endure those inconveniences on larger trips.

Noise

The Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 lens has an incorporated OIS, although I was surprised to listen to a buzz more than gentle and constant ‘when I attached the lens to my camera. Okay, I was at home on a surprisingly calm day (AH, peace and tranquility when the little one is outside …) but it was annoying. It must be that the OIS works, although it did not change when I turned off if it was off; The only time he was silent was when the shutter had pressed stockings. However, when you are outdoors, you will not notice at all. Even in a quiet dog walk, with a bird choir in the distance, the buzz had effectively disappeared.

Price

Without a doubt, this is the most expensive lens I have. New, you are seeing around £ 1,449, which I know sound crazy. Fortunately, I have been attentive to the sites used as MPB and Facebook groups, so I got into a good business of a confidence seller on Facebook for £ 690. There are some brands here and there, but nothing that affects the quality of the image. If you can get a good offer in a used lens, it will be very well spent money. Would you buy the new lens? Well, if I didn’t have a budget in mind, then, of course, but for those of us who are a bit more frugal, probably not. That’s why I love the used lens market!

General thoughts

I have not had the lens at all, but I have still managed to take it with me on a prolonged dog of dogs, as well as two days in the streets of York. This lens is one to stay safe and I think it will fit very well in my camera bag for larger trips and maybe also weddings. In terms of travel photography, I have a very exciting press trip in a matter of weeks for which Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 is almost perfect. I would probably not use it every time I go out to take a street photograph, but my travel photograph will certainly benefit from this lens!

I thought I would discourage me to use the lens in the streets of a small one, but I really enjoyed away the action and still capture details without being too obvious. I love the compression of the use of longer focal lengths and, once you exceed the fact that it is heavier and much larger than the main lenses, this can be a great lens to travel and street photography. It definitely brings something different to the table and I love it.

If you have the budget and are looking for the best possible quality, you cannot see beyond the Fujifilm lens 50-140 mm f/2.8. I know that the Fujifilm 55-200 mm f/3.8-4.5 is cheaper, smaller, lighter and has more reach, but, at least, at least, there is not even an argument: the first wins delivered every time. But, and it is great but, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, then there is nothing mistaken With 55-200 mm and, of course, it will be more than good enough for many people.

I hope you enjoyed reading my first impressions of Fujifilm 50-140 mm F/2.8, I would love to listen to your thoughts, so feel free to leave me a comment below and I will answer as soon as I can!
