Deep in Nueva Wales del Sur, is the small town of Peak Hill. This is my guide to visit the Peak Hill Gold mine; A large open cut mine worth exploring.
The city of Peak Hill can be found on the Newell Highway between Parkes and Dubbo in the Nueva Gales del Sur Regional. It is likely that any traveler in the area passes through Peak Hill on the A39 road and my wife and I thought it was a perfect place to stop not only for a break of driving but also to explore the Peak Hill Gold mine for which this city is famous.
Peak Hill as a city developed in 1889 thanks to the discovery of gold. Two open gold mines were established until 1917 before starting again between 1996 and 2002. The rich mining story here is free to explore in the form of self -guided paths that offer exceptional views on open cut mines. I’m afraid it is unlikely to find gold tendency!

Now that he has stopped in Peak Hill to stretch his legs, it is time for him to walk through the open cut -off mine and admire the old oxidized machinery.
There are some different walks to complete, but the first step before going anywhere is to take a picture of the map, that way you cannot miss! There are two main paths; Or the Golden mine discovery path that is 1.3 km long or the beak of Bush Hill, which is 1.8 km long. The last walk takes you around the perimeter of the five open cuts, but the Discovery path will allow you to see them all.
The main visualization platform of the patented mine is only 100 meters from the parking lot if you do not feel like a complete walk. There is something in the color of the rocks and the way the light hits that makes it extremely photogenic. If you have a drone, you can get some excellent photos here.
We do not spend too long here in the Gold Mine of Peak Hill, maybe less than an hour, but it is a great place to stop to enjoy some incredible views and reflect on how it should have been extracted by gold here at the end of 1800. There are bathrooms, a lot of space to park (and turn with a caravan), even if you take into account the mosquitoes and heat if you are going to walk more.
